    The only vacation rental checklist you will ever need for your Outer Banks trip.

    We’ve all done it. You show up for an amazing holiday, only to realize you left something important at home.

    Whether you’re staying with us, or in any other vacation rental, here’s a checklist of things you’ll need to make sure to pack or ask about to enjoy a flawless experience.

    Vacation Rental Checklist

    YOUR COMPLETE VACATION RENTAL CHECKLIST

    Staying at a rental home is different from a typical hotel stay and you’ll want to pack accordingly. While rental homes usually include basic kitchen and living supplies, there are things you may want to bring with you to help make your stay more enjoyable no matter where you’re vacationing.

    GENERAL CHECKLIST

    • Driver’s license, cash, credit card, insurance info, and passport (for international travel)
    • Reusable water bottles and ziploc bags (handy to store miscellaneous items)
    • Medications (along with a copy of your prescription) and a first aid kit
    • Travel tickets, home rental reservation information, activity tickets, and any necessary directions or contact info

    CLOTHING

    • Look up the weather forecast for the period of your stay
    • Check if your rental home has a washer/dryer so you can pack less
    • Appropriate footwear for planned activities

    GADGETS

    • Chargers for phones and laptops
    • Power adapter (if travelling internationally)
    • Video games and system
    • Portable fan (if there is no A/C)
    • Flashlight for night walks or in case of a power outage
    • Earbuds and a small portable speaker for music

    KITCHEN

    • Your favorite spices (most rentals only stock salt & pepper)
    • Corkscrew
    • Coffee and filters (check in advance if the home has a drip coffee maker or uses pods)
    • Dishwasher and laundry detergent
    • Paper towels
    • Aluminum foil and plastic wrap

    BATH

    • Toiletries: comb, toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, shaving cream, razor, body lotion, etc. (most homes will include shampoo, conditioner and soap but not all so check in advance or pack your own)
    • Hair dryer, straightener, curling iron

    SLEEP

    • Personal bedding and pillow if you cannot sleep with the host-provided ones due to allergies or other concerns

    KIDS & PETS

    • Travel crib (if not provided) and a small folding stroller
    • Safety gate to block stairs or cordon off kitchen area
    • Pet bed, leash, bowls, and food/snacks

    • Beach chairs (depending on how many are provided, check in advance)
    • Sun tent and/or umbrella
    • Beach towels, blanket, and bag
    • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses
    • Beach toys & games
    • Cooler for snacks and drinks
    • Local beach information (for fun and safety)

    LAKEHOUSE VACATION RENTAL CHECKLIST

    • Inflatable tubes, dinghies, floaties, and an air pump
    • Goggles and water toys/games
    • Fishing supplies and license
    • Lifejackets (if not provided and if needed – dependant on activities)

    MOUNTAIN CABIN VACATION RENTAL CHECKLIST

    • Hiking boots/shoes and poles
    • Backpack
    • Sunscreen and bug spray
    • Binoculars
    • Bear spray and bear bell
    • Hiking guide and/or trail map
    • Survival kit (band-aids, antiseptic, matches, compass, flashlight, multi-tool knife, pain meds, whistle, etc)
    • Battery back-ups (in case of a power outage)
    • Rain/snow gear (jacket, boots, pants, etc)

    PLANNING FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES?

    • Picnic basket including plastic or disposable cups, plates, and cutlery
    • Portable chairs and/or picnic blanket
    • Umbrella, hat, and sunglasses
    • Cooler and/or ice packs

    STUCK INDOORS BECAUSE OF A RAINY DAY OR SNOW?

    • Movies
    • Deck of cards
    • Board games
    • Video games and system
    • Books, magazines or an e-reader
    • Laptop or tablet (avoid opening those work-related apps!)
    • Fun playlist(s) and a bluetooth speaker

    LAST-MINUTE RUSH

    • Be sure to pack any necessary prescription medications
    • Don’t overpack, most things can be purchased at your destination
    • If you forget something, don’t worry, everyone does!
    • Securely store your IDs, legal documents, and reservation papers
    • Rental homes often provide guests with a starter kit containing the basics like shampoo/conditioner, hand and dish soap, toilet paper, etc. (check to see what is included)
