    Homebase

Nothing sets the tone for a vacation like your accommodations. When you’re planning a romantic getaway, whether it’s just the two of you or several couples traveling together, choosing the right place matters even more. While quality one-on-one time is key, sharing laughs and making memories with your crew is part of the fun, too. It’s important to make sure you have the space to get away together on your own while still being able to spend time with your friends. OBX vacation rental homes are the way to go for couples looking to vacation together.

These larger homes cater to group getaways and offer many of the features and amenities couples look for, such as:

    • Multiple bedrooms with private bathrooms
    • Large kitchens to cook as a couple or as a group
    • Multiple decks for private enjoyment or getting together
    • Large living areas with ample space to spread out
    • Recreation rooms with games and activities
    • Media rooms and home theaters for movie nights
    • Private pools and hot tubs
    • Large outdoor spaces for groups and couples to enjoy

When heading for a couples getaway as a group, personal space is the key to a successful vacation. While hotels can be a good fit for just the two of you, it’s not ideal for spending time with a larger group. The right Outer Banks vacation rental home will offer you and your partner the space to retreat into romance while still having easy access to commonly shared spaces to hang out with your friends. It’s a good thing that the Outer Banks has a huge selection of options for you to choose from! Whether you want to watch sunsets cozied up in a soundfront rental gazebo or watch the waves crash while you sip your morning coffee from the dune-top deck of your oceanfront home, the perfect accommodations are waiting for you!

    Hitting The Outer Banks Beach

Nothing beats a long walk on the beach, am I right? We have plenty of that. With over 100 miles of coastline, you can walk the beaches of the Outer Banks from sunup to sundown if you want. But with so many beach activities to enjoy, you’ll likely find yourself out on the water getting some thrills or maybe just lying back with some drinks and snacks, watching the waves roll in.

Looking for a unique and unforgettable adventure? Head up to Corolla for some off-road 4×4 beach adventure driving! This is as coastal as it gets: drive your 4×4 right on the sand and park just feet from the crashing waves, feel the sun on your skin and the salt in the air. This is the most epic way to truly feel what the OBX is all about. You can set up your own private seaside spot for the day with your crew, the beach, and the sea to enjoy. Just imagine a day spent away from the crowds, with your partner, your best friends, and maybe even a wild horse or two roaming the beaches.

Want to break away for some romantic one-on-one time? With so many stunning beaches surrounding you, that’s an easy wish to grant. Just wander off hand in hand to soak it all in, and come back to home base when you’re ready to socialize again.

    Getting In The Water

Couples that swim together…well I don’t know a good way to rhyme that, but you know fun can be found in the water at the Outer Banks. Whether it’s sound or oceanside, here are some chill and exciting activities to consider:

Paddle side by side in tandem kayaks through the calm waters of the Currituck Sound. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a perfect chance to spot wildlife. For something more challenging, try stand-up paddleboarding. It’s easy to learn and surprisingly fun once you find your balance. Some rental shops even offer early morning or sunset paddle tours, adding a romantic touch to the experience.

If you’re looking for more adventure, rent jet skis and explore the water with the wind in your hair and the excitement of speed. Local outfitters in Duck, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head rent them by the hour, and, if you’ve never done it, riding across the open water together is guaranteed excitement and a great way to create an unforgettable memory. Another fun and exciting activity on the water to consider is parasailing. This activity is sure to have you talking for years to come. Take in stunning aerial views while flying high above the Atlantic for a guaranteed “remember when” Outer Banks moment!

For another hit of excitement and a truly OBX experience, surfing lessons are a must! Local surf schools offer private or small group sessions, so you can learn the basics together.

Whether you head out on the water with your whole vacation group or as a couple, it’s a great way to spend some time connecting with your significant other.

Fine Dining And Casual Coastal Fare

It’s different strokes for all kinds of folks (got my rhyme in that time) who visit the Outer Banks. Whether you want to dress up and go out for an upscale dinner or you’re seeking a laid-back beachy vibe, you don’t need to go far.

In Duck, EvenTide Restaurant sets the mood beautifully. Sunset views over the sound, spacious covered patios, and a menu of charcuterie, fresh salads, and wine that pairs well with a romantic evening.

Then there’s Coastal Cravings, which might be attached to a gas station, but delivers gourmet comfort food like nobody’s business: think crab cake sandwiches that make your taste buds stand up and take notice, plus a brie-stuffed BLT that’s a staff pick. Bonus? Live music and a spacious Tap Shack backyard with games and a bar.

Slide into Kill Devil Hills, and you’ll find JK’s Restaurant, perfect when the two of you want to get a little fancy without judgment. They’re known for in-house aged steaks, a great wine list, and top-choice seafood and ribs.

Cross over to Nags Head, where Sam and Omie’s brings decades of laid-back charm right across from Jennette’s Pier. Warm, beach-inspired atmosphere, a love for its fishing-history roots, and casual meals served with a smile. It’s the kind of place where you can talk for hours over fresh seafood.

And for something with a bit more live-music ambience, Tale of the Whale is waterfront dining at its best. Established in 1980, it offers seafood, steaks, pasta, and a rotating lineup of local musicians during high season, plus stunning soundfront views.

    Romance Is For The Birds

Bird watching, that is. If you’re a nature lover (like all of us), bird watching, along with other wildlife exploration, is a magical way to share time with your partner and a great way to spend time with your group. The Outer Banks is a hotspot for bird watchers, especially around Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Audubon Sanctuary in Corolla. Depending on the season, you might catch ospreys fishing, snowy egrets wading, or massive flocks of migratory birds sweeping the sky. The marshes and soundside trails near Duck and Kitty Hawk can also deliver exciting wildlife moments.

But birds are just part of it. Of course, there are the legendary wild horses of Corolla, descendants of Spanish mustangs that have roamed the beaches for centuries. Watching them roam the dunes or graze near the waterline feels like stepping into another world. And don’t forget what you’ll find in the water. If you go with our recommendation for kayaking or paddleboarding, you might spot turtles, dolphins, or even stingrays gliding below you. We’re not sure anything beats a couple’s activity than seeing all the wildlife that the Outer Banks is home to.

    Popping The Question?

If you have the perfect proposal spot on your mind, look no further! The Outer Banks has more romantic spots to ask that life-changing question than you could ever dream of!

A classic romantic option is the Duck Boardwalk at sunset. Stretching along the sound, it offers peaceful views, gentle breezes, and quiet pockets away from crowds (especially near the northern end). Enjoy a glass of wine at The Blue Point, then stroll down that scenic walkway until the timing feels just right. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch an unforgettable sunset.

For something more elevated (pun intended), Currituck Lighthouse in Corolla offers a 360-degree panoramic view after a short but memorable climb. Proposing at the top means a sweeping vista of the ocean, sound, and pine forest all around you.

A more unique and popular spot is Jockey’s Ridge State Park, offering a dramatic, wind-swept landscape. Hike to the top of the tallest sand dune on the coast, and you’ll find views of both the Atlantic and the Roanoke Sound. Time it right, and you can propose just as the sun dips below the horizon.

Another perk to traveling with your couples’ crew is that you can be sure to have one or two of them hiding off to the side somewhere to snap a photo of your magical moment! Plus, you’re guaranteed an unforgettable engagement party at your rental home with the friends that mean the most to you. A truly unforgettable time and place to pop the question!
