History of the Outer Banks Wright Kite Festival

The Wright Kite Festival began in the 1970s and has been a local favorite since! It’s one of the most vibrant and enriching celebrations on the Outer Banks, where locals and visitors from around the world gather to commemorate the Wright brothers’ first successful powered flight on December 17, 1903. The event was established to honor both the science of flight and the Wright brothers’ lasting legacy. When you attend this festival, not only are you enjoying a fun local event, but you are literally standing on the very ground that helped shape aviation history.

What to Expect at the Wright Kite Festival

One of the best parts of the Wright Kite Festival is how hands-on and interactive it is. Not only can you watch massive kites, some reaching up to 100 feet, soar above the memorial grounds, but everyone in attendance is also encouraged to bring their own kites to fly or purchase one on-site from Kitty Hawk Kites. Engaging, hands-on demonstrations, both educational and entertaining, along with free stunt and power kite lessons, are led by expert instructors, who teach participants how to build kites and explain the principles that enable them to fly. In addition to its educational elements, the Wright Kite Festival promotes a strong sense of community, bringing people together to share a common and memorable experience and creating an atmosphere of celebration and connection. The event typically includes performances and huge kite displays, ranging from animal shapes to abstract designs, that showcase creativity and skill, making it a fun, lively gathering where everyone can enjoy it together.

Explore the Wright Brothers National Memorial

All festivalgoers are encouraged to explore the scenic 428-acre park, featuring walking paths, picnic areas, and sweeping views once you reach the top of the Wright Brothers Monument, which offers panoramic vistas of the Outer Banks from sound to sea. Next on your journey are the reconstructed camp buildings that replicate the structures used by Orville and Wilbur Wright during their experiments in the early 1900s. These include a wooden hangar, where they stored and repaired their gliders, and a small living quarters building where they ate, slept, and planned their work. The buildings show how simple their setup was during their research and experimentation with flight. If you want to follow in the footsteps of the Wright Brothers’ first flights, then visit the First Flight Boulder and walk the flight line. The First Flight Boulder marks the spot where the first powered flight began in 1903, and it’s one of the most iconic photo spots in the park, while the flight line allows you to experience the exact path of the Wright Brothers’ flights, their takeoff point, and landing spots of each flight. The Visitors Center and Museum is a fun, interactive experience featuring a full-scale replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer, along with displays that explain the science of flight, early glider experiments, and the brothers’ problem-solving process. You’ll also find historical photographs, original tools, and informative films that bring the story of the first powered flight to life.

    See You There!

The Wright Kite Festival is an amazing way to celebrate both history and community in a fun, lively, and engaging setting. It honors the legacy of Wilbur and Orville Wright in the very place where they achieved their groundbreaking first flight, giving visitors a chance to really connect with the past in a personal and memorable way. Through interactive activities, vibrant displays, and shared moments of excitement with family, friends, and visitors from around the world, the festival creates a fun, one-of-a-kind vibe where you can learn, explore, participate, and simply enjoy the beauty of the kites flying overhead.
